Reverse osmosis (RO) is a filtration technology that removes large molecules and ions from water by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of an ion selective membrane. The result is that the solute (impure salts) are retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure water (solvent) passes to the other side. The membrane does not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but allows water (H₂O) to pass freely.
